Character Sketch of Mr Thomas Marvel in The Invisible Man: Mr Thomas Marvel is a short, fat man. He gives the impression of a tramp – the shabby hat, the charity boots, his clothes and his homeless lifestyle. The narrator says that he does everything in a leisurely manner, which means that he is a lazy guy. Griffin makes him his sidekick even though he himself considers him stupid and good for nothing. Thomas Marvel is a jolly old tramp unwittingly recruited to assist the Invisible Man as his first visible partner. He carries around the Invisible Man’s scientific notebooks for him, and, eventually, a large sum of money that Griffin had stolen.

Mr Thomas Marvel is a coward of a man and is unable to stand up to Griffin. He becomes his partner in crime but cheats him. He does everything leisurely and at the moment was pondering over the pair of shoes that he must wear. He had two pairs and was unable to decide which one would be best to wear.

Mr Thomas Marvel is also a very opportunistic person. The first chance that he gets, he tries to sneak away from Griffin, but fails. The second time he manages to run away with all Griffin’s money and his three books. Mr Thomas Marvel is very clever in the sense that he himself gets arrested, as he knew Griffin was after him. Moreover, he kept the three books for himself in the hope of solving their mystery – an act of foolishness.

Mr. Thomas Marvel is a jolly old tramp with no home or job. He wanders from place to place, usually asking people for food or money. The author has unwittingly recruited him to assist the invisible man as his first visible partner. He carries around the Invisible Man’s books for him. He wears a shabby high hat, and we first meet him considering two pairs of boots, both probably given to him as charity. There is an air of abandon and eccentricity about him. He was bearded, plump and of short limbs. He wore a furry silk hat, twine and shoelaces are a substitute for buttons at critical points of his costume. He drinks a lot and when he heard the invisible man for the first time, he thought that it was his dizziness due to drink that he sounded like this. He is a practical man as he acceded to the request of the invisible man after knowing that an invisible man is a man of power and can help him a lot.
